Is black omld causing my twins' persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

Our twins have been having persistent coughs and runny noses for the past few weeks, and we can't figure out why. I was putting away winter clothes in the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the back wall, probably from the humidity. I'm really worried it's affecting their health. What's the best and fastest way to deal with this to make the room safe for them again?

Black mold exposure can indeed cause persistent respiratory symptoms like coughs and runny noses, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing. The high humidity in Dubai, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like storage cupboards, creates an ideal environment for this growth.
For the immediate safety of your twins, restrict their access to that area entirely. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. The fastest and most effective approach is a professional inspection and remediation. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source—often condensation from an AC line or a small, hidden leak—and take samples to identify the mold species, which determines the necessary containment and cleaning protocol. The Dubai climate means this is likely a humidity/condensation issue. A remediation team will use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobials to remove the growth safely, followed by addressing the root moisture problem to prevent its return. For health concerns, consulting a pediatrician is also advisable, as they can assess if the symptoms align with environmental allergen exposure. Resolving the underlying moisture issue is the only permanent solution. |
