Is black shower grout mold needing professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners, and it's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. I've tried wiping it with bleach spray, but it just lightens it for a few days before it comes back darker. I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaner?

Black shower grout in Dubai is almost certainly mold, driven by the high humidity and condensation from daily showers and year-round AC use. Bleach only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the root structure, which is why it returns stronger.

For a small, surface-level area, you can try a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrubbing deeply into the grout lines. The key is to reduce the bathroom's humidity; run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls to deprive the mold of the moisture it needs to thrive.

However, if the discoloration returns quickly after a thorough cleaning or if you notice a persistent musty smell, the mold has likely penetrated deep into the porous grout or behind the tiles. This is a common issue here and is beyond a surface wipe. At this stage, DIY efforts can often disturb it, causing spores to spread into the air or the wall cavity.

A professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden growth within walls, which is a primary concern. Remediation involves removing compromised grout, treating the area with EPA-approved biocides, and often applying a sealant to prevent recurrence. For extensive issues, Dubai Municipality guidelines outline proper containment and disposal procedures to prevent cross-contamination.
