Is black shower grout mold needing professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for the past couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back. We live in an older villa in Al Barsha, and the bathroom has no window, so I think the humidity is the real issue. I'm worried it's getting behind the walls. Is it worth hiring a professional mold remediation company here, and what should I realistically expect to pay for a small bathroom?

Black shower grout in a Dubai villa is almost certainly mold, given our high humidity and the lack of ventilation in your windowless bathroom. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

The primary concern is indeed moisture behind the tiles. In a villa of that age, persistent moisture can degrade the underlying wall structure and insulation. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent of the damage behind the wall using moisture meters and possibly a borescope camera. This is not just a cosmetic issue.

For remediation, expect the process to involve isolating the bathroom to prevent spore spread, removing the affected grout and potentially compromised tiles, treating the substrate with antimicrobial solutions, and addressing the core moisture issue—typically by installing or improving an exhaust fan to meet Dubai building standards for humidity control. The final step is re-grouting and sealing with a mold-resistant product.

Cost is driven by the extent of hidden damage. A simple regrouting job is one thing, but if the wall backing is damaged, the scope increases significantly. Reputable companies provide a detailed assessment and quote only after this inspection. You are paying for their diagnostic process and the guarantee that the moisture source is fixed, not just the visible mold cleaned.
