Is black shower mold causing our persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

The grouting between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has turned completely black, and no matter how much I scrub, the musty smell just won't go away. My two-year-old daughter and I have both had a weird, persistent cough for the last three weeks, and I'm starting to get really worried it's connected. We're in an older building in Jumeirah, and I know the humidity doesn't help. Could this mold be causing our respiratory issues, and what's the most effective way to get rid of it for good, not just bleach it white?

Yes, the black mould in your shower can definitely be the cause of your persistent coughs. The damp, humid environment of a bathroom, especially in Dubai's climate, is a perfect breeding ground for mould. When disturbed by shower steam or cleaning, its spores become airborne and are easily inhaled, irritating the respiratory tract and exacerbating allergies, particularly in young children like your daughter.

Scrubbing with bleach only removes the visible pigment, not the root structure (hyphae) growing deep within the grout. This is why the musty smell returns. For a lasting solution, the moisture source must be controlled. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is venting properly outside. Wipe down wet tiles and glass doors with a squeegee to reduce standing water.

For effective cleaning, skip the bleach. A paste of baking soda and white vinegar or a dedicated mould-removing product applied and left to dwell on the grout will be more effective at penetrating. However, given the health symptoms you're both experiencing and the likelihood of deeper contamination, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can perform an air quality test to confirm the spore count and identify the mould species, which is critical for understanding the health risk and the required remediation protocol. In severe cases, grout may need to be professionally removed and replaced to fully resolve the issue.
