Is bllack mold in AC vents making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my own allergies are going crazy, and I think it's because of the black stuff growing along the edges of our AC vents in the living room. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and the AC is always running. Is this black mold, and could it really be making us this sick?

It very likely is contributing to your symptoms. The black substance around AC vents is often Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (true black mold), both of which thrive in Dubai's humid climate where constant AC use creates significant condensation. This moisture, combined with dust in the ducts, creates an ideal environment for mold growth.

The persistent coughing and worsened allergies you describe are classic reactions to mold spores being circulated by the AC system. These spores irritate the respiratory tract, and children are particularly susceptible. In older Bur Dubai buildings, aging AC systems and potential leaks in ductwork are common culprits.

For your situation, a two-step approach is recommended. First, stop the exposure by having a professional clean the AC unit and ductwork. Look for a provider that uses HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments, and who can provide before-and-after documentation of the cleanup. Second, identify the source of the moisture causing the growth. A mold inspection can pinpoint if this is due to a clogged drain pan, poor insulation, or a leak in the system itself.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality, and a professional assessment can determine if the situation meets thresholds for remediation. Given the duration of your symptoms and the visible growth, a lab test to identify the specific mold type is advisable to understand the health risk fully. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
