Is closet black mold urgent or can I fix it?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our villa in Mirdif always feels a bit damp, but after the recent humidity, I opened it to find fuzzy black spots all over the back wall and some of our leather bags. We've been sleeping in that room the whole time. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Based on the symptoms you've described—fuzzy black spots, a persistent damp feeling in a Mirdif villa, and visible growth on leather goods—this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of high humidity, which is endemic to Dubai's climate, and the constant cooling from year-round AC creates significant condensation issues, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets. This is a prime environment for mold proliferation.

Attempting to treat this yourself with a bleach solution is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by adding moisture. More critically, disturbing the mold without proper containment protocols can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the risk of inhalation and spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system. Given that you have been sleeping in the room, a professional inspection is non-negotiable to assess potential airborne spore levels and health risks.

The fuzzy texture indicates active growth. A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species (e.g., the potentially toxic Stachybotrys chartarum) and determine the extent of the infestation behind the walls. Remediation must follow strict guidelines for containment, removal, and hygienization to ensure the problem is solved permanently and safely.

For a situation of this urgency in a living space, I recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Do not delay, as this poses a risk to both your property and health.
