Is closet mold a health hazard needing immediate attention?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black spots on the back wall, and it’s been spreading since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging some storage boxes. My main concern is how quickly this can become a health hazard—is this something I need to call a professional for immediately this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Closet mold in Dubai's climate is a health concern that warrants prompt attention, but immediate emergency action isn't always required. The black spots spreading on your closet wall are a direct result of our high humidity, which creates condensation on cooler interior walls, especially in closets against external walls or near bathrooms. This dampness allows mold colonies to establish and proliferate rapidly.

For most healthy adults, this type of mold primarily causes irritation—worsening allergies, congestion, or respiratory discomfort. The risk is significantly higher for infants, elderly individuals, or anyone with asthma or compromised immunity. Since it's in your bedroom closet, your exposure duration while sleeping is a key factor.

You should address it this weekend. Start by moving all items out of the closet to prevent spore transfer. Wipe down affected non-porous surfaces with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Identify and eliminate the moisture source—it's often condensation from an AC duct running through the closet or a nearby external wall cooling down. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door open and using a dehumidifier.

If the affected area is larger than a square meter, the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or you have vulnerable individuals at home, a professional inspection is recommended. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which determines the actual risk level and required remediation scope. In many Jumeirah apartments, this is a recurring issue that requires a long-term moisture control strategy rather than just a one-off cleaning.
