Is closet mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks, and I'm starting to worry. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our spare room and found a bunch of them covered in black spots, and the whole area has that damp, earthy smell. We live in an older building in Deira and I know the humidity has been awful lately. Could the mold in the closet be the reason for their coughing, and what's the safest way to clean it without making them sick?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the conditions in your Deira apartment, it is highly probable that the mold discovered in your wardrobe is a significant contributing factor to your children's persistent coughing. The black spots you describe are likely a species of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or Aspergillus niger, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are respiratory irritants and can trigger allergic reactions, asthma, and chronic coughs, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing.

The climate in Dubai, particularly the extreme humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning systems, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. AC units that are not regularly serviced can themselves become sources of microbial contamination, spreading spores throughout the indoor environment. In older buildings, issues like inadequate ventilation and thermal bridging can lead to condensation within wall cavities and closets, providing the moisture necessary for mold to flourish on organic materials like cotton and leather.

For your safety, I strongly advise against attempting a DIY cleanup. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating your family's health issues. Standard cleaning agents are often ineffective at addressing the root cause and can leave behind allergens and irritants.

The only safe and effective course of action is a professional assessment. Our certified inspectors use specialized equipment such as moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air and surface sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, the moisture source, and the specific species present. This is crucial for designing an effective remediation protocol that complies with UAE health and safety standards.
