Is closet mold causing my wife's allergies and how to remove?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corners of our master bedroom closet. It's been extra humid the last month and the room doesn't get much sunlight. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. Could this mold be the reason for her allergies and what's the safest way to get rid of it without making us sick?

The black mold in your closet is very likely causing your wife's allergy symptoms like stuffy nose and itchy eyes. This is a common issue in Dubai bedrooms, where high humidity and lack of sunlight create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in enclosed spaces like closets.

For safe removal, first identify and address the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from an external wall or lack of air circulation. Wipe the visible mold with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted detergent solution. Never use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and only lightens the mold without killing it. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

After cleaning, improve conditions to prevent regrowth. Use a small desiccant dehumidifier in the closet and leave the door ajar to allow air from the AC to circulate. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent, comfortable temperature to reduce humidity swings.

If the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or symptoms continue after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and confirm the source of moisture, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
