Is closet mold from a leak or humidity? DIY or pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles in the corners, and it’s spreading. It’s been really humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried it’s from a possible leak in the building’s external sealant. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

Black speckles spreading in a closet on an external wall point to a moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from the AC meeting the hot external wall, but a failed building sealant is also a common culprit, especially after recent humidity.
A DIY bleach spray is not recommended. It only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem. More critically, it can release harmful spores into the air and may worsen the issue by adding moisture. For a small, surface-level patch, a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution can be used with proper ventilation and PPE. However, since the mold is spreading, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will use a moisture meter to definitively identify the source—whether it's internal condensation or an external leak—which dictates the fix. If the building envelope is compromised, your building management may be responsible for repairs under Dubai's strata laws. For confirmed internal issues, remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. Simply cleaning it without solving the moisture problem guarantees it will return. |
