Is closet mold in Dubai apartment an urgent problem?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to have a really damp, earthy smell, and I just pulled out a couple of winter jackets to find small black speckles all over them. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but with the humidity rising again, I'm getting worried. Is this something I need to get a professional to look at immediately, or can it wait a couple of weeks until my schedule clears up?

That damp, earthy smell with black speckles on your jackets is a clear indicator of active mold growth. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, particularly in enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls.

The urgency depends on the extent. A few small speckles on items you've just discovered suggest a contained issue that can likely be managed for a couple of weeks, provided you act immediately to stop its spread. Remove all affected items for cleaning and leave the closet empty and open to improve air circulation. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted vinegar solution to address surface growth. Crucially, identify the moisture source. It's often condensation from the air conditioning, where the cold wall behind the closet meets the humid room air.

However, if the musty smell is very strong, you see fuzzy growth on the walls or ceiling of the closet itself, or if any household members are experiencing increased allergy symptoms, a professional assessment becomes more urgent. Mold hidden within the wall cavity or behind baseboards can proliferate quickly in high humidity.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water intrusion that you cannot see. They can also take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is the only way to determine the specific health risks and required remediation protocol. For a science-driven approach, the goal is to diagnose the root cause, not just wipe away the visible signs.
