Is closet mold urgent and has it spread behind walls?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom in Jumeirah, which we rarely use, has felt really damp lately. I opened the closet yesterday and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on some stored winter clothes. It's been so humid the past few weeks even with the AC running constantly. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and could it have already spread to the walls behind the closet?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of black, fuzzy spots on both the wall and stored textiles in a damp, rarely used room in Jumeirah is a significant indicator of an active mold colony. The constant high humidity we experience in Dubai, even with AC running, creates a perfect environment for mold growth, particularly in low-occupancy spaces where air circulation is poor.

It is highly probable the mold has spread behind the walls. The closet's back wall is likely an exterior wall, which is susceptible to thermal bridging and condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. This interstitial condensation within the wall cavity is a primary cause of hidden mold growth that is not visible during a casual inspection. The mold on your clothes confirms high spore activity, which will have infiltrated other areas.

This is urgent. Prolonged exposure to certain types of mold, like Stachybotrys (black mold), can lead to health issues, particularly respiratory problems. Furthermore, it can cause structural degradation of drywall and wood.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance will aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home. A professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to assess the full extent of the moisture intrusion and mold colonization within the wall cavity, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
