is closet mold urgent anf safe to stay near?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa's master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to develop small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation caused it. How urgent is it to get a professional mold removal company in to handle this, and can I safely be in the room until they come?

Closet mold in Dubai's humidity is a sign of excess moisture and poor ventilation, a common issue here. The urgency depends on the mold's extent and your household's sensitivity. For a small, contained area, it's not an immediate emergency but requires prompt attention to prevent it from spreading to walls and other belongings.
You can safely be in the room if the closet remains closed. Avoid disturbing the area to prevent spores from becoming airborne. For those with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems, it's best to limit time in the room until the issue is resolved. The root cause is the high ambient humidity, likely combined with a lack of air circulation from your AC. Simply wiping the visible mold off your leather goods is not a solution, as the spores are present and will return. The moisture source must be addressed. A professional inspection is recommended to identify if the mold has penetrated the wall itself, which is a more serious remediation project. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness. The remediation process for a contained closet often involves HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment of affected surfaces, and addressing the ventilation issue—sometimes by installing a small vent or ensuring your AC is properly balanced to circulate air into that space. Until a professional can assess, run a dehumidifier in the room and keep the closet doors open slightly when possible to improve airflow, but only if it won't spread spores to other areas. |
