Is closet mold urgent for my baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been super humid the last few weeks and the musty smell is really strong when we open the closet doors. My main concern is my one-year-old who sleeps in our room—is this something I need to get treated like, today, or can it wait until the weekend for a professional to look at?

Given the musty smell and visible growth, this requires prompt attention. With your one-year-old in the same room, it's best to have a professional assessment within the next few days, not weeks. High UAE humidity, especially with AC creating temperature differentials on interior walls, creates a perfect environment for mold to proliferate rapidly.

The urgency stems from the unknown type of mold and its potential to release spores into your bedroom's air. Infants are more vulnerable to respiratory irritants. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), any active growth can aggravate allergies and asthma.

For now, keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the area, as this can aerosolize spores. Improve air circulation in the bedroom by running the AC and perhaps a fan, ensuring it's set to a comfortable, dry temperature. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it, as improper treatment can make the problem worse.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—likely condensation from the AC or a minor hidden leak—and the mold species through lab analysis. This determines the remediation scope. In Dubai, reputable companies follow international guidelines like the IICRC S520, and their final report should include before-and-after lab results to verify the space is safe.
