Is closet mold urgent or can I treat it myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it might be spreading. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this situation warrants a professional inspection. The presence of dampness on an exterior wall, coupled with the UAE's high humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation, potentially behind the wall. What you see is often just the visible fraction of the problem.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be cleaned with a detergent solution (never bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality), your case has several red flags. The dampness indicates an ongoing moisture issue, which must be identified and resolved first. This could be due to condensation from the AC system, a minor leak, or thermal bridging in the wall. Without addressing the root cause, the mold will return quickly.

Attempting a DIY remediation in a closet storing fabrics like winter clothes also risks cross-contaminating your belongings with spores. In Dubai's climate, improper handling can inadvertently spread the infestation. A certified professional will conduct a thorough assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the moisture source, assess the extent of the growth, and provide a protocol for safe containment, removal, and moisture correction.
