Is closet mold urgent or can I use bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading in the corner of our bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s an interior wall, and the musty smell is getting pretty strong, especially since the weather has been so humid lately. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with bleach over the weekend?

Closet mold like this should be addressed promptly, especially given the recent humidity in Dubai. The musty odor indicates active microbial growth, which can worsen allergies and respiratory irritation. Since the spots are spreading on an interior wall, the moisture source is likely high humidity and condensation, common in sealed apartments with year-round AC, rather than a direct leak.

Using bleach is not recommended. It can remove surface discoloration but often fails to address the root cause. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed mold growth deeper within porous materials like drywall or plaster. It also does not effectively kill all mold types and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space.

For a spreading infestation with a strong odor, a professional assessment is the most reliable course of action. They can identify the specific species and the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation from the AC, poor ventilation, or a hidden pipe leak. In many Dubai apartments, the problem is inadequate airflow behind closets allowing humid air to stagnate and condense.

You can take immediate steps: move the clothes away from the wall to improve air circulation and use a dehumidifier in the room. For a definitive solution, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and, if necessary, air or surface sampling can determine the extent of the problem and the appropriate remediation method, which often involves controlled removal of affected materials and addressing the humidity imbalance.
