Is closet mold urgent to treat before spreading?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these small black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. I first noticed it about two weeks ago after that really heavy dew we had, and now the musty smell is getting stronger. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do I need to get this treated before it spreads to the rest of the room?

Yes, this is urgent. In Dubai's high humidity, visible mold growth and a strengthening musty smell indicate an active colony that will continue to spread. The heavy dew you mentioned likely caused condensation on that exterior wall, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on the organic materials in your closet (leather, paper, cotton).

You should act within days, not weeks. Isolate the closet immediately: remove all contents, seal any affected items in plastic bags to prevent cross-contamination, and keep the closet door closed. Increase ventilation in the room by running an AC continuously on a dry mode to lower humidity. Wiping down surfaces with a diluted vinegar solution can help superficially, but it won't address spores within the wall or the root moisture issue.

For a closet on an exterior wall, the problem is often interstitial condensation within the wall cavity itself, which requires professional diagnosis. The spreading you see is just the visible part. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often inadequate insulation or a minor leak—and the full extent. Without fixing the source, the mold will return. Given the risk of it spreading to the room's drywall and furnishings, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to prevent a larger, more costly remediation later.
