Is closet mold urgent with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just noticed a few small black spots starting to spread in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humid weather. Is this something I need to get an inspector for immediately, or can it wait a few weeks?

With kids coughing, yes, it's urgent. The combination of visible mold growth and respiratory symptoms in children means you should not wait a few weeks. Children are more vulnerable to mold exposure, which can irritate airways and worsen allergies or asthma.

The recent humid weather in Dubai is a key factor; indoor humidity above 60% allows mold to thrive on organic materials like cotton, leather, and dust in closets. The black spots spreading confirm an active moisture issue, likely from condensation or a minor leak.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source and the mold type. Some species, like Stachybotrys (black mold), produce mycotoxins that are particularly problematic for respiratory health. A proper inspection involves moisture meters and often includes air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the specific spores present. This data is crucial for determining the right remediation strategy and for your peace of mind regarding your children's health.

While you wait for the inspection, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. In Dubai, where AC runs year-round, ensuring your system is clean and not contributing to spore circulation is also important. A certified inspector can assess both the closet and your HVAC system.
