Is curtain mold causing my child's allergies and safe to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for two years and just noticed black spots forming along the bottom of the curtains in the kids' bedroom. This started after the humid weather last month, and my youngest has been sneezing non-stop since. Could this mold be the cause of her allergies and what's the safest way to clean it without making the air quality worse for them?

The black spots on your curtains are likely mold, and it's a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially after humid periods when condensation forms on cooler surfaces like windows and walls. In many cases, this type of surface mold can indeed be the direct cause of allergy symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes, particularly in children.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it carefully. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Take the curtains down outdoors to avoid spreading spores inside. Vacuum the area gently with a HEPA-filter vacuum, then wash the curtains according to fabric instructions, preferably with a hot wash if the material allows. However, if the mold has penetrated the fabric or the underlying wall is also affected (feel for dampness or check for discoloration), cleaning the curtain alone will not solve the problem. The root cause is excess moisture.

Given this is in a child's bedroom and symptoms are present, a professional inspection is advisable to identify the moisture source and check for hidden growth in walls or AC units, which is common here. They can perform an air quality test to confirm the spore types and levels, providing a clear target for remediation. The safest approach is to address the cause, not just the visible symptom, to prevent it from recurring and affecting your family's health.
