Is damp carpet mold urgent for health or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots growing along the edges of our bedroom carpet, which is right up against the wall. It's in our master bedroom in a villa in Mirdif, and the room has felt really damp ever since the heavy dew started a few weeks ago. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated for our health, or can we handle it ourselves with a vinegar solution first?

Based on the symptoms you've described—stuffy nose and itchy eyes upon waking—coupled with visible black spots and a persistent damp feeling, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The black spots are highly indicative of active mold growth, likely due to condensation. This is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Mirdif, where overnight dew and high humidity levels, combined with year-round air conditioning, create significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation on and within walls. This moisture is then absorbed by porous materials like carpet, providing the perfect environment for mold.

Attempting a DIY solution with vinegar is not recommended. Vinegar is ineffective against many mold species, particularly the more resilient types common in such environments, and will not address the underlying moisture source. Disturbing the mold by cleaning can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing your husband's exposure and potentially exacerbating his allergic symptoms. The health implications, especially for individuals with respiratory sensitivities, allergies, or weakened immune systems, can escalate from simple irritation to more severe respiratory issues.

Per UAE health and safety guidelines, pervasive indoor mold growth requires professional assessment and remediation. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, pinpoint the exact moisture intrusion source (which could be condensation, a minor leak, or rising damp), and provide a protocol for its safe and complete removal.

For your health and the integrity of your property, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Please contact our team at Saniservice for an immediate assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule.
