Is damp carpet mold urgent for my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah and found a bunch of black spots underneath, and the concrete feels damp. We had that one really heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and I'm worried the moisture came up from the slab. How urgent is it that I get a professional to look at this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

Yes, this is urgent. Damp carpet with visible mold growth underneath is a significant health concern, especially with children coughing. The black spots indicate active microbial growth, and the damp concrete slab confirms an ongoing moisture issue, which is common in Dubai villas after heavy dew or high humidity events.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with supermarket products. Surface cleaners cannot address mold growing deep within carpet fibers and the concrete slab below. Disturbing it will release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Jumeirah villas, this is often rising damp from the ground slab due to a missing or compromised damp-proof course, exacerbated by condensation from AC units. This requires a professional inspection to diagnose accurately.

For your children's health, I recommend a certified mold inspector who can conduct air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentrations. This evidence-based approach is crucial. They will also use moisture meters to pinpoint the water intrusion source. Remediation involves removing the contaminated carpet and padding, professionally HEPA-vacuuming and treating the concrete slab, and ensuring the moisture issue is resolved before any new flooring is installed. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent recurrence.
