Is damp closet mold urgent or DIY fixable?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my apartment in Jumeirah has started smelling really damp, and I just found a bunch of black spots on the back wall and some of my leather bags. We had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago and it's seemed worse since then. How urgent is it that I get a professional to look at this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

This is a very common issue in Dubai, especially after humid spells. The urgency depends on the extent, but visible growth on walls and personal items like leather bags warrants immediate attention.
The damp smell and black spots indicate active mold growth, likely fueled by high humidity trapped in the enclosed space. Leather is organic and provides a food source, making it a target. This is more serious than surface dust on a wall. For a small area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a mix of detergent and water or a vinegar solution, never bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. However, DIY only addresses what you can see. The real concern is the source of the moisture—likely condensation from temperature differences or a hidden leak in the wall from the AC drainage. Given the location is a closet against a wall, professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water source, which is critical to prevent rapid regrowth. In Dubai's climate, simply wiping it away without solving the underlying humidity problem means it will almost certainly return. A professional assessment will determine if the wall cavity is affected, which requires specialized remediation. For your health and to protect your belongings, getting it properly diagnosed is the most effective course of action. |
