Is damp mold causing my kids' allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer break, and I just found black spots behind their bedroom wardrobe. The room is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah and always feels a bit damp. Could this be the cause of their allergies and what’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing them to harsh chemicals?

Damp mold is a very likely cause of your children's persistent coughing, especially given the black spots you've discovered. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the villa's exterior wall creates a perfect environment for mold growth. Air conditioning, while cooling, can contribute by creating cold surfaces where condensation forms, feeding mold hidden behind furniture or within walls.

The safest approach is to first identify the extent. A professional inspection can determine if the visible spots are part of a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity, which is common here. For a small, contained area, you can clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted, fragrance-free castile soap. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and can release harsh fumes without addressing the root moisture problem.

Crucially, the room must be dried out. Move the wardrobe away from the wall, use a dehumidifier, and ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly to reduce indoor humidity levels. Improving air circulation around that wall is key. If the coughing persists after these measures, a lab test to identify the mold species can clarify the health risk and guide remediation. For anything beyond a very small, surface-level patch, hiring a company that follows DM guidelines and provides post-remediation verification testing is the most reliable way to ensure it's removed safely.
