Is damp mold causing my kids' cough in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but the wall feels damp and the room has felt stuffy for months. How urgent is it to get this treated in Dubai's humidity, and should we be staying out of the room completely right now?

It is very possible. Dampness and mold are common triggers for respiratory irritation, including persistent coughing, especially in children. The high humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in poorly ventilated areas like behind furniture. The damp wall and stuffy feeling you describe confirm a moisture problem that needs immediate attention.

You should restrict your children's access to that room until the mold is assessed. While not all black mold is the toxic Stachybotrys species, any mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues. The constant use of AC can sometimes hide musty smells but also contributes to condensation if the unit is not properly maintained or if there is an underlying leak.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—which could be a hidden pipe leak, condensation from the AC, or ingress from outside—and take samples for lab analysis to determine the mold species. This is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the NADCA ACR or IICRC S520 to ensure the mold is properly contained and removed, not just wiped away, which can spread spores. Addressing the root moisture issue is the only way to prevent it from returning.
