Is damp mold urgent for kids' cough in old Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black spots, and the wall behind feels damp. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with cleaning first?

Yes, this is urgent. The damp wall and visible mold growth in a wardrobe, combined with your children's persistent cough, strongly suggests a direct link. In Dubai's humid climate, especially in older Bur Dubai buildings with less efficient AC, enclosed spaces like wardrobes on exterior walls are prime spots for condensation and mold.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing it will release a high concentration of spores into the air, which can significantly worsen respiratory symptoms. The wall's dampness indicates a moisture source that must be identified and resolved first; otherwise, the mold will return immediately.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (could be a leak, rising damp, or condensation from poor insulation) and assess the extent of the growth, which is often far greater behind walls. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the mold species, as some types are more problematic for respiratory health than others.

For your children's health, improve ventilation in the room immediately by running the AC on dry mode and opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower. Keep them out of the master bedroom until the situation is assessed. A certified mold inspector can provide the documentation needed to engage your building management for repairs if the issue is structural.
