Is damp wall mold dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black fuzzy stuff I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch, especially near the corner. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management immediately?

The damp wall mold you've described is a legitimate health concern, especially for children. The coughing is a common reaction to mold spores in the air. In Dubai's climate, this is often caused by a combination of high external humidity and a cold spot on the wall where condensation forms, typically behind furniture like wardrobes that restrict air circulation from the AC.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution. However, since the wall is damp to the touch, the moisture source is active, meaning the mold will return. The priority is identifying and stopping that moisture, which could be an internal pipe leak or condensation from thermal bridging.

You should notify building management immediately. Dubai Law No. 11 of 2013 and the Rental Disputes Center guidelines place responsibility on the landlord to address structural issues causing dampness, like leaks or insufficient insulation. They are obligated to investigate and fix the source.

Given the symptoms and the size of the issue, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact cause of the dampness hidden within the wall. For health safety, a lab test of the mold can identify the specific species, which helps assess the risk level and confirms the need for remediation. Simply wiping it away without fixing the root cause is a temporary solution in our humid environment.
