Is damp wall mold urgent for coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture, and the wall feels damp to the touch. Given how humid it's been, how urgent is it to get this professionally treated?

Yes, damp wall mold is urgent for coughing kids. The dampness and black spots indicate active growth, and the proximity to your bedroom means your family is breathing those spores all night. In Dubai's humidity, this is a common issue, especially on exterior walls where condensation forms behind furniture.

The coughing is a legitimate concern. Mold exposure, particularly for children, can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to chronic coughing, wheezing, and worsened allergy symptoms. The urgency is high because the longer it grows, the more spores are released and the deeper it can penetrate the building materials.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or other household products. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially making the respiratory issues worse. The wall's damp feel points to a moisture source that must be identified and fixed first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

A professional inspection is needed to identify the mold species through lab analysis and locate the moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak, capillary action from the slab, or severe condensation. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials, and applying antimicrobial treatments. Until assessed, improve air circulation in the room and consider using a dehumidifier.
