Is DIY black mold removal safe or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from black mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. The wall has these dark, fuzzy patches and the room has felt damp since the last time we ran the AC continuously during the summer. What's the average cost range for professional black mold removal in a Dubai villa, and is it something I can tackle myself with bleach or is that a bad idea?

DIY removal is not recommended for black mold, especially given your family's symptoms and Dubai's climate. The dampness you describe suggests a persistent moisture issue, likely from AC condensation or high humidity, which will cause the mold to return even if you clean the surface.

Using bleach is a common mistake. It may lighten the visible stain but often fails to kill the root structure of the mold growing deep into porous materials like drywall. More critically, it can agitate the colony, releasing a large number of spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your kids' coughing. Disturbing it without proper containment and air filtration simply spreads the problem.

For a suspected black mold issue of this size, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the exact species and moisture source. In villas, this is often a leaking AC drain line or condensation forming within the wall cavity. Remediation requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing affected building materials. The final cost is driven by the extent of the infestation and the repairs needed, so an on-site assessment is necessary for an accurate scope. For health concerns with children present, a verified, science-led approach is the safest course.
