Is hidden mold causing our constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold hidden behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We’ve been sleeping right next to this wall. Could this be the reason for our constant headaches and sore throats, and how urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned?

Yes, hidden mold like the patch you discovered can absolutely be the cause of your family's persistent coughs, headaches, and sore throats. The proximity to your sleeping area means you've had prolonged exposure to airborne spores, which are known irritants.

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, condensation leaks inside walls are a common source of such hidden growth. The urgency is high, especially with children affected. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive cloud of spores throughout your apartment.

The immediate step is to isolate the area. Keep the sofa pulled away and avoid using that room if possible. Contact a professional mold inspection company that can conduct a proper assessment, including air quality tests to identify the spore concentration and species. This is critical, as the term "black mold" is often used for several types, some more problematic than others.

A reputable remediation team will contain the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely remove the contaminated materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. They should also identify and fix the source of the moisture—likely the AC leak you suspected—to prevent it from returning. Always request before-and-after test results to verify the environment has been returned to a safe condition.
