Is hidden mold causing our cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting awful headaches. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold hidden behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. Is this what’s making us sick and how dangerous is it to clean it myself?

Yes, hidden mold is very likely causing your symptoms. The persistent cough and headaches are classic signs of prolonged exposure to mold spores, which become airborne and are inhaled. The damp wall behind your sofa, caused by the AC leak, creates an ideal breeding ground in Dubai's humid climate.

Do not clean this yourself. Disturbing a large patch releases a massive concentration of spores into your apartment's air, potentially worsening your family's health issues. Significant hidden growth like this requires professional assessment. They will identify the exact species (as not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but many types cause reactions) and contain the area during remediation to prevent cross-contamination.

The immediate steps are to address the source of moisture. Have an AC technician repair the leak immediately. Then, for a case of this size with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly advised. They use containment barriers, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and proper disposal methods. After removal, the underlying cause—the residual moisture in the wall—must be completely resolved to prevent regrowth.
