Is indoor humidity causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy pollen season this spring, my kids have been coughing up a storm almost every night. The AC in our one-bedroom apartment seemed to be running more than usual, but it’s been mostly on in there. I’m starting to wonder if it could be mold or dust mites causing their symptoms since they only seem bad when we’re inside. Could the high humidity and poor ventilation here contribute to this, or am I overthinking it?

The issue of indoor humidity affecting your kids' coughing is indeed something that needs to be carefully evaluated. In the UAE and especially in Dubai, where we experience high humidity during spring and summer seasons, it's common for moisture levels inside homes to rise. This can certainly contribute to the presence of mold and dust mites, both well-known triggers for respiratory issues.

Firstly, let’s consider the environmental conditions that could be influencing your situation. High humidity coupled with poor ventilation is a perfect breeding ground for mold growth. Mold spores can thrive in warm and damp environments such as bathrooms, kitchens, or any area where moisture tends to accumulate. The presence of mold not only leads to unpleasant odors but also poses significant health risks, particularly for children whose immune systems are still developing.

Dust mites, another common allergen, prefer high humidity levels above 50%. They can be found in bedding, carpets, and soft furnishings. Allergic reactions to dust mite droppings are a major cause of asthma attacks and other respiratory symptoms like coughing, especially at night when the air is still.

Given these conditions, it’s highly probable that the increased activity of your AC system might not fully address the issue if the overall indoor humidity remains high. The Air Conditioning units in Dubai are designed to manage temperature but often fail to effectively lower relative humidity levels due to the ambient external conditions.

It would be prudent to conduct a professional inspection by contacting a company such as Saniservice or reaching out via 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for a thorough assessment of your apartment’s indoor environment. They can provide detailed reports on mold and dust mite presence, as well as offer recommendations to reduce humidity levels through dehumidifiers, better ventilation systems, or air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters.

In the meantime, you could try implementing some basic measures at home. Increase airflow by opening windows when weather permits, using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and ensuring that your AC system is functioning optimally. Regular cleaning of carpets, curtains, and bedding can also help reduce allergen accumulation.

Remember, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment free from mold and dust mites significantly impacts respiratory health. With the right steps and professional guidance, you can ensure a healthier living space for your family during such challenging periods.
