Is it mold in my AC and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the kids' bedroom. I've noticed a small dark patch near the vent that feels damp and has a weird, earthy smell. My toddler has been sneezing more than usual and I'm starting to panic that it's mold. How can I tell for sure if it's mold and who is the right person to call to get it tested and removed properly?

That damp patch and earthy smell are classic indicators of mold growth, likely caused by condensation from your AC unit. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with potential clogged drain lines or insufficient insulation, creates a perfect environment for mold in AC systems.

For confirmation, a certified mold inspector can perform a non-invasive assessment, often using a moisture meter and borescope camera to check inside the ductwork. The only way to know the species and potential risk is through lab analysis of a surface or air sample, which is particularly advisable with a toddler showing symptoms.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself, as this can aggravate spores and worsen air quality. For proper remediation, you need a specialist in mold removal, not just a general AC technician. They should follow a containment protocol to prevent cross-contamination, use HEPA filtration, and remove the affected carpet section if necessary. Look for a provider with certifications like IICRC and one that can provide documented before-and-after lab results to verify the space is safe. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality that reputable companies adhere to.
