Is it safe for my kids to sleep with mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a toy box from the corner of their bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah and found a bunch of black and greenish spots on the back of it and the wall behind. With the humidity lately, I'm panicking it's mold. How quickly should I get a professional mold inspection done, and is it safe for them to sleep in that room tonight?

Based on the symptoms you describe and the visible growth, it is not safe for your children to sleep in that room tonight. Persistent coughing is a common reaction to mold spore exposure, particularly in children who have more sensitive respiratory systems. The black and greenish spots indicate active colonization, likely due to the high humidity levels we experience in Dubai, especially when combined with condensation from year-round AC use and potential thermal bridging in villa walls.
The immediate health risks include exacerbation of allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and respiratory tract infections. The spores become airborne when disturbed and are inhaled during sleep. I strongly recommend you relocate the children to another, well-ventilated room immediately and avoid disturbing the mold further. In the UAE, the high ambient humidity creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation inside homes, particularly behind furniture and in corners with poor air circulation, as you've discovered. A professional inspection is critically urgent. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/o-surface sampling to identify the exact species (some are more toxigenic than others) and the full extent of the infestation, which is often far greater than what is visible. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper remediation can aerosolize the spores and spread the contamination throughout your villa. For a situation involving health symptoms and visible growth, you should schedule an inspection within the next 24-48 hours. Contact our team at Saniservice for an emergency assessment.
