Is it safe to sleep with black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in the master bedroom closet. I just pulled out some old suitcases and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate on the wall and carpet behind them. It’s been probably a month since I was last in there. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is it safe to even sleep in the room tonight?

No, it is not safe to sleep in a room with an active black mold colony, especially of that size. The primary risk is inhaling its spores, which can cause significant respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, headaches, and worsen asthma, particularly overnight when exposure is prolonged.

In Dubai's climate, this situation is urgent. The constant high humidity and condensation from your leaking AC unit are actively feeding the mold, allowing it to spread quickly within the wall cavity and carpet padding, far beyond the visible patch. You should arrange for a professional assessment within the next 48 hours.

For tonight, you have a few options. The safest is to sleep in another room and keep the bedroom door closed to contain spore dispersal. If you must use the room, increase ventilation by running an exhaust fan or opening a window (if outdoor humidity is lower) and avoid disturbing the mold area. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and carpet.

A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the AC leak first, then containing the area, removing the contaminated porous materials (carpet, padding, affected drywall), HEPA vacuuming, and cleaning with appropriate antimicrobial agents. This level of containment and removal is not a DIY task. The urgency is due to both health risks and the property damage that will rapidly escalate in our humid environment.
