Is it safe to sleep with mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this damp, earthy smell since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold, about the size of a dinner plate, hidden behind it. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that corner. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is it dangerous for us to sleep in that room tonight?

No, it is not safe to sleep in a room with a visible mold patch the size you've described. The damp, earthy smell is a clear indicator of an active moisture problem and microbial growth.
The primary risk is respiratory irritation. You may experience worsened allergy symptoms, sinus congestion, coughing, or difficulty breathing, especially overnight. The risk is higher for children, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or a compromised immune system. The specific danger level depends on the mold species, which can only be identified through professional lab testing. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Constant AC use creates cold surfaces, and when humid air from outside meets these cold walls—especially in poorly ventilated corners behind large furniture—it condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold. Simply running the AC more will not solve a condensation point like this. You should arrange for a professional inspection and remediation. For tonight, if possible, sleep in another room. If you must use the bedroom, move the bed away from the contaminated wall, ensure good ventilation by running a fan and opening windows if the outside humidity is low, and avoid disturbing the mold patch to prevent releasing more spores into the air. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate the problem without addressing the underlying moisture source. A proper remediation will identify and fix the condensation issue before safely removing the mold. |
