Is kids' bedroom mold an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Al Barsha has been feeling extra damp since the heavy rains a few weeks back. Now I’ve spotted black speckles along the bottom of the curtains in my kids' bedroom, and my youngest has developed a persistent cough that just won’t go away. I'm really worried it's connected. How quickly do I need to get a professional mold inspection, and should I keep the kids out of that room entirely until it's handled?

Yes, it is an urgent health risk, especially for children. The combination of visible mold growth and a persistent cough in a child is a strong indicator that immediate action is required. The dampness following Dubai's heavy rains creates a perfect environment for mold to proliferate in AC units and on porous materials like curtains and walls.

You should keep the children out of that room and restrict access until a professional assessment is complete. Mold spores become airborne and are easily inhaled, which can significantly worsen respiratory issues like coughing, wheezing, and allergies. Children are more vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems.

In the UAE's humid climate, where AC systems run year-round, an interior mold issue often points to a deeper problem within the HVAC system or building envelope that needs correction. A professional inspection will identify the species (some are more problematic than others) and the moisture source. This is not a surface cleaning job; proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence.
