Is kids' closet mold urgent or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’ve just discovered a patch of black and greenish mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked last month. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention and should not be handled with a DIY approach like bleach. The fact that your children are exhibiting respiratory symptoms (coughing) is a significant red flag, indicating potential exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins. The black and greenish coloration suggests a potential mix of mold types, including possibly toxigenic species like Stachybotrys (black mold) which are associated with such health effects.

Attempting to clean it yourself with bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, can exacerbate the problem by releasing a concentrated cloud of spores into the air upon agitation, and its high moisture content can actually feed future mold growth. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for condensation and mold proliferation, improper remediation will almost certainly lead to rapid regrowth.

A professional inspection is critical. We would conduct air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels in the bedroom air, assess the extent of hidden growth within the wall cavity, and identify the precise moisture source. Remediation involves sophisticated containment of the area, use of HEPA filtration devices to capture airborne spores, and the application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents, not bleach, to eliminate the colony at its root.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. This is not a weekend project; it is a potential health hazard that requires expert intervention.
