Is kids' cough from mold an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. I found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. Given how bad it looks and that my kids are already sick, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in here? Is this a call-I-make-today level of emergency?

Yes, this requires immediate professional assessment. Given the visible growth and your children's persistent respiratory symptoms, this is a situation to address within days, not weeks.

The type of mold is critical. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, many other black-colored molds are less hazardous but still problematic for sensitive individuals, especially children. Their ongoing cough is a significant indicator that the mold is actively affecting indoor air quality and their health. In Dubai's climate, where we rely on AC year-round, a hidden leak creates a perfect, humid environment for rapid mold proliferation inside walls, often far beyond what's visible.

For a patch large enough to be described as "huge," DIY cleaning is not advised. Disturbing it can release a massive amount of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening the situation. Professional remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely removing the contaminated materials.

The first step is a professional inspection, ideally from a company with its own microbiology lab, to identify the species through air and surface sampling. This diagnosis dictates the remediation protocol. You should also have your AC system inspected for leaks and microbial growth, as it is likely spreading spores throughout the house. While not a same-day emergency like a burst pipe, you should contact a certified inspector this week to prevent further exposure and assess the full scope behind the walls.
