Is mold behind sofa urgent for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled out the sofa in our living room to find a toy and the back wall behind it has a large patch of black and green fuzzy stuff, probably from where the AC unit on the wall sometimes drips condensation. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this.
How urgently do I need to get a professional mold inspection, and can this wait until the weekend or is it a call-I-need-to-make-today kind of problem?

A professional inspection should be scheduled within the next 48 hours. Given the visible growth and your children's symptoms, this is a priority. The combination of the UAE's high humidity and constant AC use creates ideal conditions for mold, and a hidden colony this large is a significant source of airborne spores.
The fuzzy, green-black appearance suggests active growth, and the link to AC condensation is a classic cause. While you wait, isolate the area: move the sofa away from the wall, keep children out of the room, and avoid disturbing the mold yourself to prevent spreading spores. Run an exhaust fan or dehumidifier in the room if available. A proper inspection will identify the mold species and the full extent of the problem, including moisture within the wall itself. Remediation for a case like this is not a simple wipe-down; it requires containment, professional-grade antimicrobial treatment, and fixing the underlying moisture source—likely the AC drip line or insulation issue. Many Dubai municipalities require proof of professional remediation for landlord disputes, so documentation from a certified provider is key. |
