Is mold behind wardrobe urgent for kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the heavy fog a couple of weeks ago. I finally moved their wardrobe today and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading on the wall behind it. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in to deal with this, especially with my children sleeping in there?

Yes, this is urgent. A dinner-plate-sized patch indicates significant moisture accumulation behind that wall, likely from condensation or a minor leak exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity. With children sleeping in the room, immediate action is required.

The damp smell you noticed is microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), a clear sign of an active colony. The primary concern is that continuous exposure to these spores can aggravate asthma and allergies, causing persistent congestion, coughing, or skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Scrubbing visible mold without addressing the hidden moisture source and containing the area will aerosolize spores, spreading them throughout the room and HVAC system. For a patch that size, professional remediation is the standard recommendation to ensure it is handled safely.

The immediate steps are: move the children to another room until it is resolved, keep the bedroom door closed to contain spore spread, and ensure the AC is turned off to prevent it from circulating contaminated air. A proper remediation will involve identifying and correcting the moisture source (often condensation from an AC supply line or a cold bridge in the wall), physically removing the contaminated material, and HEPA vacuuming the area.

Given this is in a villa in Jumeirah, the wall likely has a cavity where the mold may have spread further unseen. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the full extent. Always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent third party to confirm the spore count in the room has returned to a normal background level.
