Is mold behind wardrobe urgent to treat for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this persistent damp smell since the weather turned humid a few weeks ago. I finally moved their wardrobe today and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading on the wall behind it. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and is it safe for them to sleep in that room tonight?

Yes, this requires prompt professional assessment and treatment. The combination of visible growth, the damp smell, and the presence of children makes this a higher priority.

The Dubai climate is a major factor. High humidity, especially during the summer and transition months, leads to condensation on cooler exterior walls. Placing a wardrobe against that wall traps moisture and creates the perfect environment for mold. The species commonly found in such conditions, like Cladosporium (green) and Stachybotrys (black), can produce allergens and irritants. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, exposure can lead to worsened allergy symptoms, coughing, and congestion.

Regarding tonight, if the children are not experiencing any adverse symptoms and the room can be well-ventilated, the short-term risk is often manageable. However, the mold spores are airborne, which is the source of the smell. For immediate mitigation, keep the wardrobe away from the wall, use a dehumidifier or run the AC continuously to lower humidity, and ensure good air circulation in the room. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (often a leaking pipe or capillary action through the wall) and assess the extent of the growth, which can spread inside wall cavities. Reputable remediation follows Dubai Municipality guidelines for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. The goal is to fix the water issue and safely remove the biomass, not just wipe it away.
