Is mold causing my child's illness and how to remove it safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of the kids' bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while, and my youngest has had a persistent runny nose and cough for months that the doctor just can't pin down. Could this mold be the reason my child is constantly sick, and what's the safest way to get rid of it with kids in the house?

Yes, that mold could very well be contributing to your child's persistent symptoms. In Dubai's humid climate, hidden mold growth is common, especially in closets or behind furniture where air circulation is poor. The constant runny nose and cough you describe are classic reactions to prolonged mold exposure, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

For a situation like this, especially with a child's health involved, the safest approach is a professional inspection. They can assess the true extent of the growth behind the wall and identify the specific mold species, which determines the health risk and remediation method. Do not attempt to clean a significant patch yourself, as improper scrubbing can release a massive amount of spores into your home's air.

Until a professional can visit, improve ventilation in the room by running the AC on dry mode and using a portable dehumidifier. Keep the closet door open and the area clear. Move your child to another bedroom if possible. For small, surface-level mold on non-porous materials, a solution of white vinegar can sometimes help, but this is a temporary measure and not a solution for a deeper problem. The priority is identifying the moisture source—often condensation from an AC duct running in the wall or a small, unseen leak—and fixing it to prevent recurrence.
