Is mold causing my kids' constant allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a constant runny nose and cough for the last month, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a bag of winter clothes from the back of our walk-in wardrobe in our Mirdif villa and found a whole section of the wall behind it covered in black, fuzzy mold. Could this be the cause of their allergies, and how dangerous is it to stay here while we get it sorted?

It is very possible the mold is contributing to your children's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation within AC-cooled homes create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes against exterior walls. The persistent runny nose and cough you describe are classic reactions to mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive.
The black, fuzzy mold you found indicates an active and significant moisture problem, likely from a small leak or condensation buildup in that wall. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory irritation. The duration of their symptoms strongly suggests an environmental trigger like this. You should arrange for a professional mold inspection. A proper assessment involves using a moisture meter to find the water source and often taking an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the species. This is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation. In the meantime, keep the children out of that room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release more spores into your home's air. For a villa in Mirdif, remediation will involve fixing the underlying moisture issue, removing the contaminated materials safely, and cleaning the air with HEPA filtration. Do not attempt to clean a patch this size with bleach yourself, as improper methods can make the problem much worse. Focus on getting a professional diagnosis first. |
