Is mold causing my kids' constant coughing and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out the large play mat in our spare room where they play every day, and the underside is covered in black and greenish spots. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and it's been so humid lately. Could this mold be the cause of their constant sickness and what's the safest way to clean it without making them even more sick?

Yes, the mold on that play mat is very likely contributing to your children's persistent coughing and allergy symptoms. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in villas where air circulation can vary, mold growth on porous items like play mats is common. The constant exposure in their play area means they are inhaling mold spores directly, which is a known irritant for respiratory systems and a common trigger for allergy flare-ups.
For a situation like this, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a massive amount of spores into your home's air, potentially making their symptoms much worse. The safest first step is to isolate the mat—carefully roll it up, seal it in a large plastic bag, and remove it from the home entirely for disposal. Given that the growth was this extensive on a single item, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible growth often means there is a broader humidity issue in that room or your AC system, which could be spreading spores elsewhere. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the moisture and take air samples to identify the types of mold present; this is critical for understanding the health risk and planning remediation. Until the issue is resolved, use a dehumidifier in the children's play area and ensure your AC units are set to maintain a consistent, low humidity level, as this is your primary defense against mold growth in our climate. |
