Is mold causing my kids' cough and sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer break, and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the edges of the carpet in their bedroom, which is on the colder side of our villa in Al Barsha. Could this mold be the reason for their constant runny noses and sore throats, and what’s the safest way to deal with it when you have young children?

It very likely is. The black spots along the carpet edge are a classic sign of condensation mold, common in Dubai villas where cold AC meets humid air, creating the perfect damp environment for growth. The mold spores become airborne and are a known irritant, causing the exact symptoms you describe: persistent coughing, runny noses, and sore throats, especially in children.

For immediate safety, restrict your children's access to that room. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself, as improper scrubbing can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. For a small area, a damp wipe with a mild detergent can help contain it temporarily, but the underlying moisture issue must be addressed.

The safest approach with young children is a professional inspection. They can identify the exact mold species—some are more problematic than others—and use containment procedures like HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment to remove it safely without cross-contaminating your home. To prevent recurrence, ensure the room's AC unit is serviced to reduce humidity drift and improve ventilation.
