Is mold causing my kids' cough? Urgent treatment needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it looks like it's been there a while with all the black and green spots. Given how humid it's been in Dubai lately, is this something I need to get treated like, tomorrow, or can it wait until the weekend for a proper cleaning?

Yes, it very well could be. A persistent cough in children is a common reaction to mold exposure, which acts as a respiratory irritant. The black and green spots you describe behind the wardrobe suggest a established colony, and the recent high humidity has likely caused it to sporulate more, increasing the airborne spore count your family is breathing.

Given the climate in Dubai, where we run ACs year-round, spores from that localized spot are likely being circulated throughout your home's air. This is not something to panic over, but it is urgent and should not wait for a casual weekend clean. The priority is to identify the scope and stop the exposure.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or simply wipe it away. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially making the situation worse. The first step is a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (likely condensation from the AC or a slow leak) and assess the extent, as mold can grow inside wall cavities. A proper remediation plan will include containment, HEPA filtration, and safe removal.

For your children's health, I would recommend arranging an inspection within the next day or two. Until then, try to keep the bedroom door closed and the AC vent in that room turned off to reduce circulation. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test the air quality to confirm the spore levels and identify the species, which helps determine the precise health risk and verifies that the cleanup was successful.
