Is mold causing my kids' nighttime cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m starting to think it’s the black spots I found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It’s been there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and I’ve just been wiping it away with bleach, but it keeps coming back. Is this something I can keep tackling myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company?

Nighttime coughing in children, especially when paired with recurring black spots in a humid climate like Dubai's, is a strong indicator of a mold-related issue. The high humidity we experience, combined with year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in hidden areas like behind wardrobes where condensation can form.

Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not address the root cause—the fungal roots (hyphae) growing into the porous wall material. This is why it consistently returns. For a persistent problem like this, a stronger cleaner is unlikely to be effective and could mix harmful chemicals with mold spores, potentially worsening the air quality.

The coughing is likely a reaction to inhaling elevated levels of mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released into the bedroom's air, particularly at night when the room is closed up. In such cases, professional assessment is strongly recommended. A proper inspection will identify the exact moisture source (like a condensation leak from an AC pipe or rising damp) and the extent of the hidden growth. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials to prevent regrowth.

For your own safety, stop wiping the area, as this disturbs and aerosolizes the spores. Keep the area well-ventilated and consider using a dehumidifier in the room to lower humidity levels below 60%, which can help slow its spread until a professional can assess the situation.
