Is mold causing my kids' post-vacation cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I’m starting to panic. I’ve noticed some black spots behind the wardrobe in their bedroom here in our Jumeirah villa, which is always a bit humid. Could this be mold, and how do I find a reliable company to do a proper inspection and tell me how bad it really is?

The black spots behind the wardrobe and the persistent cough are strong indicators of a mold issue, especially given the high humidity in Dubai villas. When a home is closed up for summer vacation with the AC off, humidity soars, creating ideal conditions for mold growth in hidden areas. The cough is likely an allergic reaction to mold spores now circulating in the air.

You need a professional inspection. In Dubai, look for a provider that uses a borescope to inspect inside walls and cavity spaces, as the visible spots are often just the tip of the iceberg. A truly reliable company will conduct air quality testing to measure spore levels and take tape or swab samples of the black spots for lab analysis to identify the exact species. This is critical, as some types like Aspergillus pose greater health risks than others.

Avoid any inspector who immediately quotes for remediation without providing diagnostic evidence. Ask for their methodology upfront; they should explain how they'll test the air and surfaces. The most credible firms will provide a detailed report with lab results from an accredited microbiology lab, which clearly states the species present and the concentration levels. This evidence-based approach is what separates a proper inspection from a simple visual assessment.
