Is mold causing our coughs and how to inspect?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather turned humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. I’m really worried this mold is making us sick.
What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should we avoid that room completely until it’s checked?

Yes, mold can definitely cause those symptoms. The persistent coughs and headaches in humid conditions, combined with the visible black growth, strongly suggest a connection. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold behind furniture and inside walls where condensation forms.
You should avoid that room, especially for the children, until it's inspected. Mold spores become airborne and are easily inhaled, which can irritate the respiratory system and worsen symptoms. For a proper inspection, hire a professional who uses a borescope to see inside wall cavities and air conditioning ducts, as the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. They should also conduct air quality testing to measure spore levels throughout the house. Crucially, ensure the inspection includes lab analysis to identify the specific mold species, as this determines the actual health risk and required remediation approach. In the UAE, look for providers who can demonstrate certified methodologies and provide a detailed report with lab findings, not just a visual assessment. This evidence-based approach is the only way to confirm the source and scope of the problem. |
