Is mold causing our coughs and what's first step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit drips. We’ve been sleeping in this room every night. Could this mold be the reason for our constant sore throats and headaches, and what’s the absolute first step I should take to deal with it safely?

Yes, that black mold is very likely contributing to your family's persistent coughs, sore throats, and headaches. The constant AC use in Dubai creates significant condensation, and a chronic drip point against a wall is a perfect environment for mold to flourish. The spores become airborne and are inhaled, which is a common irritant.

Your absolute first step is to stop the moisture source. Identify where the AC condensate drain line is leaking or blocked—this is the root cause. Wipe up any standing water immediately. Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself with bleach or other store-bought solutions, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and make the situation worse for your family.

For a patch that size in a living area, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can assess the extent of growth, which often spreads behind walls, and safely contain the area during remediation to prevent cross-contamination. In many cases, a lab analysis is needed to confirm the mold type, as "black mold" is often used for several species, some more problematic than others.

Until it's professionally addressed, reduce exposure by ventilating the room and, if possible, relocate sleeping arrangements. This is a serious indoor air quality issue, and proper remediation following DHA-approved guidelines is the only way to resolve it safely.
